Black Pepper Tofu

Also known as bean curd in English, is a food prepared by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into solid white blocks of varying softness. Tofu is a super source of protein and healthy carbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack tofu (firm)
  • 4 tbsp corn starch
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ x red onion
  • ½ x red chili
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp ketjap manis
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 pinch roasted sesame seeds
  • 1 pinch spring onion

Method

  1. Start with the tofu. Dry and carefully squeeze out the excess of water, before you cut it into medium cubes. Toss them in some cornstarch and shake off the excess, then add to the hot oil. Fry, turning them around, until they are golden all over and have a thin crust. As they are cooked, transfer them onto paper towels.
  2. Rinse and dry the frying pan and add some oil. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, black pepper, ketjap manis, fish sauce and oyster sauce. Stir everything in until the sauce is reduced, add the tofu to warm it up in the sauce for about a minute. Finally, stir in the green onions. Serve hot, with steamed rice. Sprinkle over some toasted sesame seeds and spring onions.
