Norwegian Fastelavns Buns

If you are going to make classic Norwegian "Fastelavns" buns, you must try this recipe! These turn out so fluffy and good - and with wipped cream and jam, it's party time! 1 serving makes 8 large buns.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ dl milk
  • 50 g liquid margarine
  • ½ pack dry yeast
  • 500 g plain white flour
  • 50 g sugar
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ dl heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 2 dl strawberry jam

Method

  1. Heat milk in a saucepan until it is slightly warmer than your finger. Add liquid margarine and dry yeast. Mix together and set aside.
  2. Mix together wheat flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt to a bowl. (Preferably a kitchen machine.)
  3. Make sure that the mixture of margarine, milk and yeast is well mixed. Add this to the flour mixture and knead the dough for approximately 10-15 minutes.
  4. Let the dough rise for 1.5–2 hours.
  5. Divide the dough into equal parts. For one serving, make 8 buns. Shape each portion into round balls and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  6. Let them rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.
  7. Bake the buns in the middle of the oven at 200 degrees celsius for about 15-20 minutes. Cool on a rack.
  8. Whip the cream together with the vanilla sugar.
  9. Divide the buns and spread a layer of strawberry jam and a couple of spoonfuls of cream. Place the top and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve immediately.
